Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has confirmed that the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) will dispatch a team to Vanuatu to aid in recovery efforts following a devastating 7.3-magnitude earthquake that struck the nation on Tuesday.
In his announcement, Mr. Rabuka indicated that arrangements are being made to repatriate any Fijians residing in Vanuatu if necessary. A Fiji Airways aircraft will be on standby to facilitate possible evacuations.
The RFMF team is scheduled to remain in Vanuatu throughout the Christmas season to ensure continued support for relief operations. The earthquake has resulted in the tragic loss of 14 lives, injured about 200 individuals, and inflicted significant destruction, including collapsed homes, landslides that have blocked roads, and damaged vehicles.
Prime Minister Rabuka underscored that this deployment reflects Fiji’s commitment to solidarity with its neighboring countries during hardships, showcasing the nation’s dedication to helping Vanuatu on its path to recovery.
