Fijian military and police personnel are set to be deployed to Vanuatu tomorrow to assist with recovery operations following the devastating earthquakes that struck earlier this week. This initiative reinforces Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s commitment to supporting Vanuatu in its recovery efforts.
Prime Minister Rabuka has been in communication with Vanuatu’s Prime Minister Charlot Salwai, offering Fiji’s readiness to provide assistance. Expressing deep concern over the tragic loss of at least 14 lives due to the magnitude 7.3 earthquake and its aftershocks, Rabuka has acknowledged the extent of the devastation, which has severely impacted healthcare facilities, infrastructure, including roads and buildings, as well as critical water reservoirs and gas lines.
Given the damage to the airport’s runway, the planned route for aid delivery will commence from Santo, Vanuatu, and proceed by boat to the affected regions. Fiji is also collaborating with Australia and New Zealand to ensure that logistical support reaches the hardest-hit areas, despite ongoing challenges.
Despite the grave circumstances, the support from neighboring Fiji showcases regional solidarity and an unwavering frontline response to help those in need. As recovery efforts unfold, there is hope that with collective assistance, the affected communities can rebuild and recover from this tragedy.
Stay tuned for updates on this evolving situation.
