Fijian troops are set to deploy to Vanuatu tomorrow to support rehabilitation efforts in the wake of two significant earthquakes that struck the region earlier this week. The contingent will include personnel from both the Republic of Fiji Military Forces and the Police, showcasing a unified response to the crisis.
This deployment reflects Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s commitment to assist Vanuatu in its recovery. Prime Minister Rabuka has been in communication with Vanuatu’s Prime Minister Charlot Salwai, reaffirming Fiji’s readiness to provide much-needed support during this difficult time. The Fijian leader expressed his sorrow over the devastating impact of the earthquakes, which have claimed the lives of at least 14 individuals and raised concerns with ongoing aftershocks.
Fiji is coordinating efforts with Australia and New Zealand to offer logistical support, despite challenges posed by damage to the airport runway in Vanuatu. The current plan involves entering through Santo, Vanuatu, and then traveling by boat to reach the affected areas.
The earthquakes have caused widespread destruction, impacting critical infrastructure including hospitals, roads, and two major water reservoirs, along with significant damage to gas lines. A considerable landslide has also obstructed the seaport, complicating the delivery of essential supplies and personnel.
As developments unfold, it is heartening to see nations coming together to support one another in times of crisis. This collaboration not only highlights the spirit of solidarity in the region but also brings hope for a swift recovery for the people of Vanuatu.
