Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has declared that the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) will be deploying a team to Vanuatu to aid in recovery efforts following a significant earthquake that struck the nation on Tuesday. The earthquake, which registered a magnitude of 7.3, has resulted in the tragic loss of 14 lives, injured approximately 200 individuals, and caused extensive destruction including collapsed buildings, blocked roads from landslides, and damaged vehicles.
In response to the situation, Mr. Rabuka stated that there are also plans in place to repatriate Fijians residing in Vanuatu if it becomes necessary. To facilitate these evacuations, a Fiji Airways aircraft has been designated and placed on standby.
The Prime Minister assured that the RFMF team will stay in Vanuatu throughout the Christmas period to continue supporting the ongoing relief operations, demonstrating Fiji’s commitment to stand in solidarity with its regional neighbors during times of crisis.
