Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has announced that the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) is set to dispatch a team to Vanuatu following the devastating 7.3-magnitude earthquake that struck the island nation on Tuesday.
During his announcement, Mr. Rabuka stated that there are also plans to repatriate Fijians residing in Vanuatu if the situation necessitates such actions. A Fiji Airways aircraft is on standby to facilitate any necessary evacuations.
The RFMF team is expected to remain in Vanuatu throughout the Christmas period, providing vital assistance and support for ongoing relief efforts. The earthquake has resulted in the loss of 14 lives, injured approximately 200 individuals, and caused significant damage, including collapsed buildings, landslides blocking roads, and damaged vehicles.
The Prime Minister emphasized that this deployment reflects Fiji’s unwavering commitment to standing by its neighbors in times of crisis, reinforcing the nation’s dedication to aiding Vanuatu in its recovery process.
