The Fiji Emergency Medical Assistance Team (FEMAT) has commenced its urgent mission to Vanuatu this week, following a devastating 7.3 magnitude earthquake that struck the island two weeks ago. This deployment reflects Fiji’s commitment to providing support to its regional neighbors during crises.
A 12-member FEMAT team will deliver essential medical assistance at Port Vila and the Vila Central Hospital over the next two weeks. Before their departure, the team received acknowledgment from Dr. Jemesa Tudravu, the permanent secretary for the Ministry of Health and Medical Services. “You are not only representing the Ministry of Health but also Fiji,” he expressed, highlighting the personal sacrifices of each team member in leaving their families behind to fulfill this important duty.
Fiji’s support extends beyond medical aid, with Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka announcing a $1 million aid pledge to assist Vanuatu’s recovery efforts. This financial backing aims to support rebuilding infrastructure and aiding affected communities, emphasizing that while the contribution cannot erase the damage done, it represents a vital step toward recovery.
Rabuka also recognized the efforts of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF), who have been active in Vanuatu since the earthquake, working under precarious conditions and even sacrificing their holidays for rehabilitation efforts. This is not the first time FEMAT has been deployed for disaster assistance in Vanuatu. The Pacific’s first WHO-verified Emergency Medical Team, FEMAT previously aided in recovery after Tropical Cyclones Kevin and Judy in March 2023, showcasing Fiji’s leadership in enhancing regional disaster response and medical support.
Vanuatu’s recovery initiatives include debris removal, restoring water supplies, and rebuilding critical facilities. International aid agencies and local authorities are working tirelessly to provide shelters and necessities for displaced residents. FEMAT’s intervention will significantly support these operations, focusing on delivering medical care and enhancing healthcare services in the hardest-hit regions.
