Radio broadcasting in Fiji has a rich history that dates back to 1935, serving as a vital link within communities, particularly in remote areas, by keeping families informed and sharing cultural narratives. Despite the rapid advancements in technology, including digital media and artificial intelligence, radio remains a cornerstone for delivering accurate and reliable information.
Eseta Nadakuitavuki, the Permanent Secretary for Information, emphasized that while technology may improve the tools used in broadcasting, it cannot substitute the human touch that radio provides. She highlighted the significance of the bond between broadcasters and their audience, which fosters trust and connection within communities.
On World Radio Day, celebrated with the theme “AI is a tool, not a voice,” the Fijian Broadcasting Corporation received accolades for its long-standing service in the industry. Nadakuitavuki addressed the prevalence of misinformation in today’s media landscape and reiterated the community’s need for factual, evidence-based information. She called for a strengthened relationship among broadcasters, technicians, producers, and listeners, expressing gratitude for the role they play in keeping radio vibrant and engaging.
In 2011, UNESCO designated February 13 as World Radio Day, a moment to honor the contributions of those in radio. Looking towards 2026, Nadakuitavuki expressed enthusiasm about exploring the synergy between radio and AI.
Similarly, British High Commissioner to Fiji, Kanbar Hossein-Bor, reinforced the trust and reliability of radio as a medium in contemporary society. He acknowledged the longstanding relationship between the UK, the BBC, and Fiji’s FBC, stating that radio remains an essential tool for disseminating information and fostering connection.
As the celebrations unfold, broadcasters, producers, and listeners alike are recognized for their contributions, ensuring that the spirit of radio continues to flourish, offering companionship and fostering community connections across Fiji.
