Fiji’s Supervisor of Elections, Ana Mataiciwa, recently proposed a significant reform aimed at enhancing transparency in political funding. During a presentation to the Standing Committee on Justice, Law, and Human Rights, she suggested that political donations exceeding the current limit of $10,000 should be disclosed within ten days of receipt. This initiative seeks to fortify accountability in the electoral process and is in alignment with international best practices and stakeholder feedback.
Mataiciwa emphasized that the existing limitation mandates donations to be made by Fijian citizens, but the proposed change would require timely reporting of larger contributions to cultivate public trust. The Fijian Elections Office (FEO) is considering this proposal as part of a comprehensive review based on input from political parties and civil society groups following the 2022 General Elections, showcasing a commitment to adapting best practices to Fiji’s specific context.
The proposal is receiving support from committee members, including Jone Usamate, who addressed concerns about the influence of large financial contributions in politics. Usamate cautioned against the trends observed in larger democracies, particularly the United States, where substantial corporate donations can significantly sway election outcomes. “We don’t want the largest financial contributors to determine the direction of our elections,” he stated.
