Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, has highlighted the urgent need for action against climate change during a recent meeting with the UAE Special Envoy to the Pacific, Omar Shehadeh. Professor Prasad remarked on the Pacific Islands’ vulnerability, pointing out that six of the top 20 countries most prone to disasters are situated in this region.

Despite this precarious situation, the Pacific receives only around US$220 million each year in climate finance, which is a small fraction of the US$2 billion necessary to effectively manage climate adaptation and transition to renewable energy sources. The Deputy Prime Minister reaffirmed Fiji’s commitment to the targets set at COP28, including a 43 percent reduction in emissions by 2030 and striving for net-zero emissions by 2050.

Professor Prasad also recognized the support from the UAE regarding renewable energy initiatives and educational programs in Fiji, expressing hope for continued collaboration in addressing the significant climate challenges faced by the Pacific Islands.

This meeting underscores the critical nature of global partnerships in combating climate change, especially for regions that are disproportionately affected. With collective efforts and increased financial support, there is potential not just for adapting to climate impacts but also for a transition to more sustainable practices that could lead to brighter futures for Pacific nations.
