The Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission in Fiji is advocating for universal medical fitness requirements for all drivers, emphasizing that targeting specific age groups is both discriminatory and ineffective in tackling the nation’s mounting road safety issues. Human Rights Commissioner Chantelle Khan expressed deep concern over the rising number of road traffic accidents, particularly those associated with drink-driving and driving under the influence of drugs.
Khan highlighted that safety on the roads is best achieved through a standardized approach to medical assessments that applies to all drivers, irrespective of age. “Public safety is best served when medical fitness requirements apply universally to all drivers, rather than selectively targeting any single age group,” she stated. This approach not only promotes fairness but also addresses the risks posed by drivers who may be unfit, regardless of their age.
By advocating for an age-neutral system, Khan communicated the idea that road safety should hinge on an individual’s health and driving responsibility rather than arbitrary age limits. “A uniform, age-neutral approach reinforces the message that road safety is about fitness and responsibility, not age,” she remarked.
The Commission posited that public safety and human rights are complementary objectives, with Khan suggesting that a rights-based driver licensing framework bolstered by universal medical evaluations could enhance road safety while respecting constitutional rights to equality and dignity.
“A rights-based, age-neutral licensing regime will help keep Fiji’s roads safe while ensuring no group is unfairly disadvantaged,” she added. The Commission is encouraging policymakers to pursue inclusive, evidence-based reforms that effectively mitigate risks related to drug and drink driving.
Khan reaffirmed the commitment of the Commission to monitor ongoing developments and advocate for initiatives that champion public safety while promoting non-discriminatory practices, ultimately fostering safer road conditions for all residents of Fiji.
