The Government has decided against opening public transport e-ticketing to new service providers for the time being, emphasizing the need to stabilize and enhance the existing system to ensure reliable service for commuters across the nation. Minister for Policing and Communications Ioane Naivalurua clarified that the current e-ticketing contract was awarded to Vodafone Fiji Ltd after a competitive tender process, which adhered to governmental procurement standards.
Naivalurua highlighted that Vodafone Fiji Ltd was chosen through this formal process. As part of the new iteration of the e-ticketing system, the government is implementing additional measures aimed at improving access, convenience, and efficiency for users. This includes a dedicated mobile application that offers top-up and redemption functions, QR Pay capabilities, and the use of scheme cards, ensuring that users have multiple options for transactions.
The Minister emphasized the importance of reaching rural and underserved communities by instructing Vodafone to collaborate with stakeholders to expand access. This initiative includes the exploration of alternative app-based agent models, which would empower trained community members to serve as top-up agents in areas lacking access to traditional services. This approach is not only intended to broaden coverage but also to create income opportunities for unemployed individuals within these communities.
Naivalurua reaffirmed that ensuring an efficient e-ticketing system for public transport is a priority for the Government. The commitment remains to deliver e-ticketing services that are efficient, inclusive, and provide value for money. While future opportunities for additional service providers will be considered through established procurement processes, the Government’s immediate focus will be on the successful rollout, stabilization, and optimization of the current system to guarantee reliable and efficient service for all commuters.
Previously, the Minister hinted at a potential overhaul of the e-ticketing system that could allow more service providers to enter the market, indicating that the government is exploring various avenues to enhance its transport services while keeping community needs at the forefront. This systematic approach shows promise for the future of public transport accessibility in the region.
