Fiji Prisons Crack Down on Contraband: What’s at Stake?

The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) is facing increasing challenges with the smuggling of contraband items into prisons. Recently, during a routine search at Naboro Prison, authorities confiscated a large black plastic bag filled with a touchscreen mobile phone, marijuana, mobile batteries, dry fish (suki), and a white powder believed to be drugs.

FCS officials are deeply concerned about the rising trend of illegal activities within prison facilities, noting that it hampers their rehabilitation efforts for inmates. The agency stated, “While we remain committed to the humane treatment of offenders, the smuggling of drugs and other contraband is a serious issue that directly impacts our rehabilitation goals.”

In light of this ongoing issue, the FCS is reviewing and reinforcing its security measures. One significant concern has been finding contraband concealed within items brought in during family visits.

To enhance security, the FCS has made the decision to suspend the consumption of cooked food brought by inmates’ families and relatives during the upcoming festive season. While they recognize the importance of food in family bonding during this time, they emphasized the need for precautionary measures to prevent harmful items from entering the facility.

The FCS is urging the public’s cooperation to help maintain the safety and integrity of the prison system. The suspension of cooked food is part of a broader strategy to combat the growing problem of drug smuggling and contraband infiltration.

This proactive approach reinforces the FCS’s commitment to safety while also emphasizing the importance of rehabilitation for inmates. As communities come together to face these challenges, there is hope that enhanced security measures will lead to a safer environment for both staff and inmates, ultimately helping to facilitate a more effective rehabilitation process.
