Authorities in Fiji are increasingly concerned about the ingenious methods being used to smuggle drugs into correctional facilities, with items such as baby diapers, toothpaste tubes, and flip-flops becoming unconventional carriers for illicit substances. The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) reports a troubling rise in these smuggling attempts, highlighting the desperation of inmates and visitors fueled by ongoing drug addiction issues behind bars.

Acting Commissioner Auta Moceisuva shared alarming instances of drugs being concealed in everyday household items. In a case of particular concern, drugs were found hidden within a baby’s diaper during a visit, illustrating the lengths to which some individuals will go to circumvent prison security measures. Despite the implementation of tighter security protocols, the demand for drugs within correctional facilities continues to motivate such brazen attempts to evade detection by prison officers.

“In some instances, drugs can be found hidden in heavy bottles, Colgate toothpaste, or even concealed within fruits,” Moceisuva explained. The prevalence of these incidents is notable, with authorities detecting two to three cases within a given period, including packages found at Naboro and surrounding cemetery areas where inmates are assigned work duties.

To combat this issue, FCS has bolstered surveillance measures and enhanced the deployment of trained canine units. “We strive to maintain security through our canine capabilities in conjunction with our staff,” Moceisuva stated. He acknowledged the struggles of many inmates with drug addiction, noting that the withdrawal from drugs often leads to restlessness among those affected.

In light of these challenges, authorities are also considering technological advancements for security at prison gates, such as the installation of X-ray machines to better monitor incoming goods. These proactive steps showcase the FCS’s commitment to addressing the drug problem and enhancing the safety and security of Fiji’s correctional facilities.
