The Acting Commissioner for the Fiji Correction Service, Auta Moceisuva, has emphasized that the ongoing issue of overcrowding in remand centers is primarily an infrastructure challenge that demands substantial investment from the government. He highlighted that this overcrowding issue is exacerbated by the presence of drug addicts among the inmate population. Correctional officers frequently face the difficult task of managing inmates experiencing violent withdrawal symptoms, often without adequate medical support.

Moceisuva acknowledged alarming incidents where officers have been assaulted while dealing with inmates going through detoxification, a process made more perilous due to the lack of necessary resources. Additionally, he revealed that some inmates resort to extreme measures to smuggle drugs and mobile phones into the facilities, often hiding these contraband items in body cavities.

To address these security concerns, Moceisuva disclosed that the Correction Service is considering the installation of X-ray machines at prison entry points to enhance the screening process for incoming inmates. However, he noted that the implementation of these measures would require significant funding.

This focus on enhancing the safety and well-being of both inmates and staff reflects a commitment to addressing critical issues within the correctional system. As discussions continue around improving facilities and support systems, there is hope that these efforts will eventually lead to a safer and more effective correctional environment in Fiji.
