Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, Viliame Gavoka, has reported that an investigation into the safety of beverages consumed by tourists in Fiji is still ongoing, with one test result pending. Despite this, initial tests conducted by Fiji Police forensic teams and independent laboratories in New Zealand have shown no harmful substances in the drinks involved.
Gavoka stated, “There’s one particular case that needs to be verified, and we are taking steps to have that done in New Zealand.” He refrained from disclosing any personal details of the individual involved, emphasizing the importance of privacy.
The Minister reassured that Fiji adheres to high food and beverage safety standards, with many hotels accredited under internationally recognized systems. He noted that although some countries have issued advisories regarding drink safety for travelers, Fiji’s hospitality sector is dedicated to ensuring the health and well-being of all visitors.
This investigation comes in the wake of concern raised last December when seven tourists were hospitalized after consuming drinks at a local resort. This incident sparked a thorough review and investigation to ensure the ongoing safety of Fiji’s tourism offerings. Gavoka previously expressed relief at the absence of methanol or other illegal substances, which significantly impacts traveler confidence in Fiji as a safe destination.
The ongoing commitment to transparency and safety reinforces Fiji’s dedication to maintaining a reliable and welcoming environment for tourists, promising a hopeful future for the tourism sector as questions surrounding the safety concerns are addressed. The swift actions and thorough investigation reflect positively on Fiji’s commitment to visitor security, helping to rebuild trust with international tourists eager to explore the islands.
