Fiji Prime Minister Holds Meetings with Opposition Leaders and Independent MPs

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has met with leaders of the National Federation Party and the Social Democratic Liberal Party, informing them about his discussions with nine Independent MPs.

Rabuka shared with FijiLive that he had conversations with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Professor Biman Prasad, and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism Viliame Gavoka.

Though details were sparse, Rabuka mentioned that both leaders welcomed the idea.

“I consulted them this morning. And as far as I am concerned the Coalition Partners are as strong as when it was initially formed,” he said.

The Prime Minister confirmed a meeting with the nine Independent MPs took place yesterday.

Rabuka stated that no agreements had been reached yet; however, the meeting’s purpose was for the nine to express their support for him as the Leader of the Government from the Opposition.

He mentioned his intention to discuss with the Speaker of Parliament the possibility of providing the nine MPs a separate facility to serve their constituents if they are not supported by the Opposition Caucus.

Rabuka also did not rule out the possibility of amending the 2013 Constitution with the support of the Independent MPs.

“That can be a result of their cooperation,” he added.
