President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu has emphasized the importance of conducting clean, credible, and lawful general elections in Fiji. In his address at the opening of a new parliamentary session, he urged political leaders, candidates, and their supporters to uphold integrity and respect the rule of law throughout the electoral process.
Lalabalavu asserted that the strength of Fiji’s democracy relies not just on constitutional checks and balances, but significantly on the behavior of those engaged in the political sphere. He warned that the foundation of democratic stability must be preserved beyond polling day, cautioning that reckless actions and divisive language can erode public trust in elections.
“To secure our democracy, leaders and political supporters must continue to engage in dialogue, compromise and respect for the rule of law,” he stated. The President also called on all aspiring public office holders to act responsibly and urged political party supporters to exercise restraint during public discussions.
He highlighted the necessity of maintaining high standards of integrity and respect for Fiji’s multicultural society among those involved in public discourse. Clean elections, he suggested, are vital for fostering trust in democratic institutions and ensuring that political competition serves to unite rather than divide the nation.
Lalabalavu reminded Parliament that the responsibility of democracy extends beyond mere electoral victories and losses, indicating that the approach taken to conduct elections will play a crucial role in shaping Fiji’s political growth and social harmony. He concluded by stating that the legacy of these elections will be judged not only on their outcomes but also on their adherence to fairness and respect for all citizens.
The President’s call for integrity in the electoral process reflects a hopeful vision for a more cohesive and respectful political environment in Fiji, reinforcing the belief that democracy thrives when all participants engage positively.
