Fiji President Calls for Global Unity at ‘Summit of the Future’

Fiji’s President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere has emphasized that the ‘Summit of the Future’ presents a significant chance for both Fiji and the global community to reinforce their commitment to safeguarding humanity’s future. During his address at the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, Ratu Wiliame stated that the pact stemming from this summit symbolizes a shared dedication to improving conditions collectively and ensuring no one is left behind.

The theme of the summit is “Summit of the Future; Multilateral Solutions for a Better Tomorrow,” and President Katonivere pointed out that the world is facing grave challenges. He noted that ongoing conflicts, the intensifying climate crisis, developmental hurdles, failing ecosystems, and widespread inequalities and injustices are all pressing issues.

Ratu Wiliame warned that it is the most vulnerable populations who bear the brunt of these challenges, stating that future generations will also suffer the consequences of current inaction. He called for a unified vision for a sustainable future, stressing that the pathway to achieving this vision relies on proactive efforts. He noted that there are only six years left until 2030 to advance the Sustainable Development Agenda.

The President urged leaders to collaborate as member states while leveraging a multilateral system that incorporates non-state actors, the private sector, and all segments of society. He stressed the importance of prioritizing peace over conflict, adhering to all human rights as outlined in the UN Charter, and ensuring the protection of the environment and its resources across land, sea, and air.
