The Cabinet has approved the findings from the review of the Local Government Act of 1972, which is crucial for the formation, governance, and operation of municipal councils in Fiji. This legislation outlines the authorities’ powers and responsibilities, ensuring they deliver essential services to their communities effectively.
The review focused on various aspects, such as the structure of the legislation, the functioning of municipal councils, the roles and responsibilities of councillors, and the involvement of the Ministry of Local Government. The goal is to modernize these laws to enable councils to better meet contemporary challenges and enhance local governance throughout Fiji’s towns and cities.
A draft Local Government Amendment Bill is in the works for 2025. Before finalizing the Bill, a public consultation process will be conducted, allowing communities, stakeholders, and ratepayers to share their opinions and contribute to the legislation’s development. This initiative demonstrates a commitment to inclusive governance and community engagement, promising a positive step forward for local administration in Fiji.
