Tropical disturbance 09F has officially reached the status of a tropical depression and is anticipated to evolve into a tropical cyclone later tonight, according to the Fiji Meteorological Service. The system is expected to enter Fiji waters from the northeast of Vanua Levu by the end of the day.

A gale warning is currently in effect for the eastern parts of Vanua Levu, including Eastern Macuata and Eastern Cakaudrove, as well as Cikobia, Naqelelevu, Taveuni, the Lau group, and the Lomaiviti group. Residents in these areas should brace for strong southeasterly winds reaching up to 50 km/h, with gusts potentially escalating to 65 km/h. From later tonight, winds could shift to a clockwise pattern, increasing in intensity up to 65 km/h with gusts of up to 90 km/h.

In addition to the gale warnings, a strong wind alert applies to the remainder of Vanua Levu, northeastern parts of Viti Levu (from Tailevu North to Tavua), Yasawa, Mamanuca, and Kadavu along with nearby smaller islands. Strong southeasterly winds in these regions will also reach speeds of 50 km/h and gusts of up to 65 km/h.

The Northern Division, along with the Lau and Lomaiviti groups, is currently under heavy rain warnings which may lead to localized flooding as the situation develops.
