The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is taking urgent steps in collaboration with the Vanuatu government to identify Fijians potentially impacted by the significant 7.3 magnitude earthquake that struck the region yesterday. Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Sitiveni Rabuka was unable to confirm the extent of any injuries to Fijians but emphasized that Fiji is prepared to provide assistance to Vanuatu.

“We are ready, with our personnel undergoing training at Blackrock,” Mr. Rabuka stated. “They can be promptly deployed along with our disaster management team from regional development.”

Defence Minister Pio Tikoduadua voiced similar concerns, noting, “We are closely monitoring the situation following the earthquake that affected Vanuatu. Fiji stands ready to assist in any way we can with the relief efforts, working alongside our partners.”

The earthquake, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), occurred approximately 30 kilometers (18.6 miles) west of Vanuatu’s capital at a depth of roughly 57.1 kilometers (35.5 miles), shortly after midday. An aftershock measuring 5.5 followed soon after. As of the latest update, authorities in Vanuatu have confirmed one casualty.

Telecommunication services in Vanuatu have faced interruptions; however, communication tools like Starlink have allowed for the dissemination of emails, photos, and videos, which have become prominent on social media.

In summary, Fiji is actively engaging with Vanuatu to evaluate the situation and extend necessary support, demonstrating regional solidarity and readiness to assist those in need in the aftermath of a natural disaster. The response highlights a collaborative spirit between nations during challenging circumstances, emphasizing a positive outlook for recovery efforts.
