Fiji’s Parliament will hold an election for a new Speaker tomorrow at 8 am, as announced in an official advisory. This parliamentary session is set to be exclusive, with proceedings scheduled to be streamed live on the Walesi platform and the Parliament’s Facebook page.

Deputy Speaker Lenora Qereqeretabua previously clarified that President-Elect Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu will not assume his constitutional duties until he officially takes the Oath of Office. She also indicated that the position of the Speaker will become vacant on November 12, 2024, at which point the vacancy will need to be filled according to Standing Order 17.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has expressed his intention to nominate Retired Judge Justice Filimoni Jitoko for the Speaker role, while Leader of the Opposition Inia Seruiratu is expected to announce his nominee shortly.

It’s important to note that, according to Section 77(1)(a) of the relevant parliamentary rules, the Speaker is to be elected by a simple majority and must be an individual who is qualified to stand for election as a member of Parliament but is not currently serving as one.

This election marks a significant moment for Fiji’s governance, as the new Speaker will play a crucial role in leading parliamentary proceedings and ensuring smooth operations within the legislative body. The live broadcast of the election promotes transparency and civic engagement, enabling citizens to witness the democratic process in action.

In summary, Fiji’s Parliament is poised for an important election that will shape its leadership structure, fostering hope for a collaborative legislative environment.
