Fiji’s Minister for Housing and Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa, has announced plans for consultations regarding changes to the number of councillors per municipality ahead of the Local Government Elections set for 2025. This initiative was discussed during a recent meeting with representatives from the Electoral Commission, where both parties emphasized the importance of preparing for a smooth electoral process.
The consultations will involve a broad range of stakeholders, including residents, political parties, youth groups, municipal councils, and various organizations. Nalumisa highlighted that this engagement is crucial for understanding the diverse concerns and needs of the community, reinforcing the government’s commitment to a fair and transparent electoral process.
These consultations are part of a larger initiative to revitalize local democracy in Fiji, a system that has faced challenges since the last local government elections in 2005. Since then, municipalities have been managed by appointed administrators rather than elected officials. Addressing discrepancies in municipal ward documentation is a necessary step to ensure fair representation and proper resource allocation.
The upcoming elections represent a significant opportunity for Fiji to enhance community involvement in governance and ensure that the voices of citizens are acknowledged. This initiative demonstrates the government’s dedication to improving democratic practices and empowering local communities, fostering an optimistic path forward for Fiji’s political landscape.
