Fiji’s Parliament is preparing to elect a new Speaker in a session scheduled for tomorrow. According to a parliamentary advisory, the meeting will commence at 8 AM and is open by invitation only. The proceedings will be broadcast live on Walesi and the Parliament’s Facebook page, allowing citizens to follow the event.
Last month, Deputy Speaker Lenora Qereqeretabua clarified that the President-Elect, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, will not assume his constitutional responsibilities until he is officially sworn in. She noted that the position of Speaker will be considered vacant as of November 12, 2024, and the process to fill this vacancy will follow the guidelines outlined in Standing Order 17.
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has announced plans to nominate Retired Judge Justice Filimoni Jitoko for the Speaker position. In addition, Leader of the Opposition Inia Seruiratu is expected to issue a statement regarding his nomination.
According to Section 77(1)(a), Parliament is required to elect a Speaker who is not a current member but is eligible to be a member of Parliament, reflecting the democratic principles underlying Fiji’s governance.
