A national team will be formed for the upcoming Four Nations T20 cricket tournament following the conclusion of the 2024/2025 Suva Women’s T20 League. This event will coincide with a match-up against female cricketers from Nadi, and has been affirmed by Cricket Fiji president Sitiveni Rokoro during the league’s fourth round at Albert Park.
Rokoro stated that the ongoing league serves as a crucial preparation for selecting the national team, which will participate in the inaugural Four Nations tournament, to be held in New Caledonia from March 9-15. Fiji’s representatives will face teams from Japan and Papua New Guinea in this significant event hosted by Cricket France.
The road to selection may prove challenging, as current national team members will need to compete against players from the Suva league as they vie for a spot. Last year, Fiji’s women’s team made strides by participating in the under-19 women’s category and competing in the Asia Pacific World Cup qualifier in Bali.
Looking ahead, 2025 is poised to be a groundbreaking year for women’s cricket in Fiji. The country will also be hosting the ICC T20 East Asia Pacific qualifier, where teams will compete for a coveted place in the Women’s World Cup scheduled for 2026. This dual focus on international representation and grassroots development reflects a bright future for Fijian cricket, emphasizing the expansion of opportunities for female athletes and youth engagement.
In summary, the development of women’s cricket in Fiji is entering an exciting phase. With increased participation in leagues, preparation for international tournaments, and opportunities for young players, the future looks promising as the country positions itself on the global cricket stage. The growing recognition and investment in women’s sports herald a new era of achievements and success for Fijian cricketers.
