The Fijian Cabinet has made the significant decision to bring the remains of Corporal Sefanaia Sukanaivaku back to Fiji from Papua New Guinea. In line with this, an Inter-Agency Committee led by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been established to facilitate the preparations for the repatriation process.
Cpl. Sukanaivalu is a revered figure in Fiji, being the only recipient of the Victoria Cross, which is the highest military honor awarded for extraordinary bravery against the enemy in the British Armed Forces. He hails from Yacata Village in Cakaudrove and rests alongside 32 other Fijian soldiers at the Bitapaka War Cemetery in East New Britain’s province, Papua New Guinea.
This important repatriation is expected to gain national recognition and is slated for June 2025, marking a moment of pride and remembrance for Fijians.
The return of Cpl. Sukanaivalu’s remains not only honors his legacy but also serves as a reaffirmation of the values of bravery and sacrifice that he exemplified. This anticipated event offers an opportunity for Fijians to come together in collective remembrance and celebration of their national heroes, reinforcing community bonds and national pride.
