The Fijian Cabinet has approved the formation of an Inter-Agency Committee, which will be headed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to manage preparations for the repatriation of the late Corporal Sefanaia Sukanaivalu VC from Papua New Guinea to Fiji in June 2025.

Corporal Sukanaivalu, honored with the Victoria Cross, is Fiji’s only recipient of this esteemed military award, recognized for extraordinary acts of courage while facing hostile forces. He originally hailed from Yacata Village in Cakaudrove and was laid to rest at the Bitapaka War Cemetery in East New Britain, where he shares his resting place with 32 other Fijian soldiers.

The repatriation ceremony is anticipated to be a significant national event, reflecting the deep respect and recognition for the sacrifices made by those who served their country.

In summary, the planned repatriation of Corporal Sukanaivalu is not just a moment to honor a hero, but also an opportunity for the nation to come together in remembrance and appreciation of the bravery displayed by its servicemen and women. Such commemorative events can foster a sense of unity and national pride, reinforcing the values of courage and sacrifice within the community.
