Fiji Prepares for Historic Repatriation of Victoria Cross Hero

The Cabinet has approved the formation of an Inter-Agency Committee, headed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to coordinate the repatriation of Corporal Sefanaia Sukanaivalu VC from Papua New Guinea to Fiji in June 2025. Corporal Sukanaivalu is celebrated as Fiji’s only Victoria Cross recipient, the highest military honor awarded by the British Armed Forces for exceptional courage in the battlefield.

Originating from Yacata Village in Cakaudrove, Corporal Sukanaivalu is interred at the Bitapaka War Cemetery in East New Britain, Papua New Guinea, alongside 32 other Fijian soldiers. The upcoming repatriation of his remains is anticipated to be a significant national event, honoring his sacrifice and bravery.

This repatriation serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by Fijian soldiers throughout history.
