Fiji Prepares for Cyclone Season: Are You Ready?

As Fiji approaches its cyclone season, which lasts from November to April, Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, Sakiasi Ditoka, has highlighted the critical need for household preparedness. The Fiji Meteorological Service projects that between one to two tropical cyclones may impact Fiji’s Exclusive Economic Zone during the forthcoming 2024-25 season, with an expectation that none to one may reach severe intensity.

Mr. Ditoka stressed the importance of families being equipped for the cyclone season while agencies are being prepared. He acknowledged the growing risks associated with climate change, emphasizing the necessity of integrating youth into disaster risk reduction efforts. He pointed out that children and young people are disproportionately affected by climate-related disasters, which can have long-term negative effects on education, nutrition, and healthcare.

To safeguard the future of the youth and Fiji as a whole, Mr. Ditoka called for their needs to be included in disaster risk reduction plans. He referred to the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (2015-2030), which underscores the importance of empowering youth and involving them in shaping these strategies. This approach is echoed in the Midterm Review of the Sendai Framework, advocating for meaningful youth participation and promoting a culture of disaster prevention.

Investing in the education and empowerment of young people is vital, Mr. Ditoka asserted, as it prepares them to protect themselves and act as change agents within their communities. This focus on youth engagement is especially relevant as Fijians work to enhance early warning systems in line with the UN Secretary-General’s Early Warnings for All initiative.
