As Fiji prepares for its cyclone season, which runs from November to April, Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management Sakiasi Ditoka is highlighting the crucial role of household preparedness. The Fiji Meteorological Service anticipates that during the upcoming 2024-25 season, one to two tropical cyclones may pass through Fiji’s Exclusive Economic Zone, with a possibility of zero to one of these reaching severe levels (Category 3-5).

Mr. Ditoka stressed the importance of personal responsibility alongside agency readiness, urging families to equip themselves for the challenges of the cyclone season. He acknowledged the growing threat of climate-related disasters, particularly their impact on children and youth, and emphasized the need to involve this demographic in disaster risk reduction strategies.

The Minister pointed out that these young individuals face not only immediate dangers but also long-term repercussions that can affect their education, nutrition, and healthcare due to the increased frequency of disasters linked to climate change. He underscored the necessity of integrating the needs of young people into comprehensive disaster management plans to safeguard their future and the future of Fiji.

This call to action aligns with the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, which advocates for the empowerment of youth in shaping disaster strategies and highlights the significance of their meaningful participation in these efforts.

Mr. Ditoka’s remarks resonate as Fijians work to enhance early warning systems, in line with the UN Secretary-General’s Early Warnings for All initiative. By investing in education and empowering the youth, Fiji can cultivate a generation capable of protecting themselves and acting as agents of change within their communities.

In summary, Fiji’s proactive approach to cyclone preparedness highlights the importance of community involvement, especially that of the youth, in navigating the challenges posed by climate change. This focus on empowerment and education offers a hopeful perspective on building a resilient future for the nation.
