As Fiji prepares for its cyclone season, which runs from November to April, the Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, Sakiasi Ditoka, has highlighted the critical need for households to be prepared. Predictions from the Fiji Meteorological Service indicate that one to two tropical cyclones may affect Fiji during the 2024-25 season, with the potential for one to reach severe categories.

In his statement, Minister Ditoka stressed the importance of personal preparedness among families, urging citizens to equip themselves timely for the cyclone season. He also acknowledged the increasing risks posed by climate change, particularly the disproportionate effects on the younger population, stating that children and youth are facing long-term challenges such as disruptions in education, nutrition, and healthcare due to recurrent disasters.

To safeguard the future of Fiji’s youth, Ditoka emphasized the need to incorporate their perspectives and needs into disaster risk reduction strategies. He referred to the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, which promotes empowering young people in developing these strategies, ensuring their active participation in disaster resilience initiatives.

This focus on engaging youth aligns with global efforts to enhance disaster response and preparedness, particularly through the UN Secretary-General’s Early Warnings for All initiative. By educating and empowering the younger generation, the Minister believes they can become proactive change agents within their communities, enhancing overall disaster resilience.

In a world increasingly vulnerable to climate-related disasters, this proactive stance can pave the way for a more resilient and prepared society, fostering a culture of safety and awareness that benefits all generations in Fiji.
