The Fiji Powerlifting team has made a triumphant return home, bringing with them an impressive haul of 19 medals from the Oceania Regional Powerlifting Championships held in Nauru from October 30 to November 2. Competing against some of the region’s strongest lifters, Team Fiji demonstrated remarkable skill and a commendable sportsmanship, solidifying their place on the international powerlifting scene.
Among the standout performances was sub-junior lifter Vivaan Patel, who made an impressive debut as the youngest competitor in the tournament, claiming gold in the U83kg category. His composed performance has laid a promising groundwork for the future of young lifters in Fiji.
The Open division showcased several remarkable achievements as well. Vinesh Chand, competing in the U66kg category, secured bronze in all lifts, underscoring his dedication in a highly competitive environment. First-time competitor Faga Varea made waves in the U93kg division by winning silver in squat, bench, and total, and clinching gold in deadlift after an exciting competition with a lifter from Nauru. His teammate, Muzammil Ali, also in the U93kg class, contributed to the team’s success by taking home bronze in all categories.
In the U105kg category, Viliame Lagonilakeba earned bronze in bench, deadlift, and total, showing remarkable resilience against competitors from Samoa and Nauru. Meanwhile, Kurt Wise distinguished himself in the U120kg division by securing silver in all lifts after facing fierce competition from a former Pacific Games champion from Nauru.
As a whole, Fiji claimed the second place in the Open division, with Nauru finishing first. This achievement marks a significant progression for Fiji’s aspirations in powerlifting, highlighting the country’s potential and talent within the sport.
