The Fiji Powerlifting Federation has announced its national team set to participate in the Oceania Regional Powerlifting Championships 2024, taking place in Nauru next month.
The team includes Vivaan Patel in the men’s sub-junior under 83kg category, Vinesh Chand in the men’s open U74kg, Faga Varea in the men’s open under 93kg, Muzammil Ali in the men’s open U93kg, Viliame Lagonilakeba in the men’s open U120kg, and team captain Kurt Wise also competing in the men’s open U120kg.
The team officials comprise head coach Eric Jioje, technical coach Ryan Bale, assistant coach Salacieli Koroi, and team manager and doctor Jessa May Bancod. While Bancod and Koroi will accompany the team to Nauru, Jioje and Bale will serve as non-traveling officials.
Viliame Lagonilakeba, who is also the president of the Fiji Powerlifting Federation, stated that the six athletes were selected through a thorough process. He emphasized that the final selections were based on recent competition results and other significant criteria, leading to the formation of a robust and well-prepared team for this highly competitive event.
Lagonilakeba acknowledged that competing in Nauru presents challenges and expressed confidence in the athletes’ abilities. He noted, “I believe the exposure and experience our athletes will gain from this competition will be invaluable.”
He also recognized the athletes’ dedication to balancing their commitments outside of the sport. “Our athletes are confident and well-prepared for the challenge, and they are eager to test their strength and skills against the top competitors in the region.”
The regional championships are scheduled to take place from October 30 to November 2.
