The Fiji Powerlifting Federation concluded its final competition of the year with the National Powerlifting Championship held on September 14 at the University of the South Pacific Fitness Centre. The competition saw a significant increase in interest and participation since the year commenced with a novice event.
Federation president Viliame Laginikoro noted this championship attracted over 46 athletes, marking it as one of the largest local powerlifting events of the year. He highlighted the blend of experienced lifters and emerging talent, particularly female competitors, creating an exhilarating atmosphere.
The Federation is dedicated to fostering the growth of powerlifting, building on its recent success at the Pacific Games. This year was particularly remarkable for the notable rise in female participation, with numerous competitive female lifters as well as a strong showing from sub-junior (under 18) and junior (19-23) athletes. Laginikoro acknowledged the energy and competitiveness these young entrants brought to the event.
The championship featured intense competition resulting in the breaking of 22 national records across both men’s and women’s divisions. Many athletes recorded personal bests, with several successfully lifting over 300 kg.
The event was characterized by camaraderie and sportsmanship, with athletes supporting one another while contending for top honors. Laginikoro pointed out that the adherence to competition rules and standards was notably stricter this year, simulating international competition conditions. The event ran smoothly thanks to meticulous organization, which enhanced the overall experience for the athletes.
Special acknowledgments were extended to Chairman’s gym for providing calibrated plates and FASANOC for supplying two new powerlifting bars, which contributed significantly to the competition.
Laginikoro emphasized that familiarizing athletes with high competition standards at home prepares them for international challenges, promoting discipline and strategic planning essential for success at elite levels.
He expressed gratitude to Pacific Energy for their invaluable support in making the event a success. With the National Championship completed, the Federation is now focused on preparing for the Oceania Powerlifting Championship in Nauru from October 30 to November 2, 2024. They aim to finalize the team representing Fiji and work closely with the Fiji Sports Commission for funding support.
This year’s National Championship has underscored the rapid rise of powerlifting in Fiji, and with ongoing support, the Federation believes that Fiji will soon excel at international powerlifting competitions.
