In 2024, Fiji’s powerlifting community experienced a remarkable year, characterized by record-breaking performances and a surge of enthusiasm for the sport across various levels. The Fiji Powerlifting Federation can look back on a series of significant achievements that reflect the growth and development within the sport.
The year kicked off with the Novice & Masters Competition on April 13 at Boyz in the Hood Gym in Nadi, which provided an essential platform for newcomers, including those aged 40 and above, to partake in the competitive powerlifting arena. Federation president Viliame Lagonilakeba emphasized the event’s role in welcoming fresh talent into the sport.
In May, the Fiji Open Classic Powerlifting Championship elevated the competition further as athletes competed in various weight classes at USP, showcasing their strength and skills. July marked a historic moment with the inaugural East vs. West Divisional Powerlifting Championship, where the West triumphed over the East on its home turf, claiming the title as the first champions.
The Fiji National Powerlifting Championship, which occurred in September at USP Fitness Gym, was the highlight of the domestic calendar. Featuring over 50 athletes, this event shattered expectations, with an impressive 21 national records broken. It also served as a trial for the Oceania Regional Powerlifting Championships set to be held in Nauru.
Fiji’s performance at the Nauru championships in November was stellar, as six athletes, alongside three officials, returned home with a total of 19 medals. Lagonilakeba remarked that this accomplishment was “a significant steppingstone” for the sport in Fiji.
In an exciting development, the Federation secured the privilege to host the 2026 Oceania Championships, which Lagonilakeba hailed as a crucial opportunity to showcase Fiji’s growth on an international platform.
As 2024 comes to a close, the achievements in powerlifting highlight Fiji’s emerging prominence in the regional scene. The dedication shown throughout the year bodes well for future growth and success, suggesting that the years ahead will continue to foster talent and provide even more exciting prospects for the sport.
