Fiji Powerlifting Championship Champions: Breaking Records and Expectations!

The Fiji Powerlifting Federation concluded its fourth and final competition of the year with the National Powerlifting Championship on September 14, held at the University of the South Pacific Fitness Centre. The year began with a novice competition, and since then, interest in the sport has grown extensively.

Federation president Viliame Laginikoro noted that the championship attracted over 46 athletes, making it one of the largest local powerlifting events. “The championship has evolved into a significant highlight of the powerlifting calendar, featuring an exciting mix of experienced lifters and emerging talent, particularly among female participants. The atmosphere was electric,” Laginikoro remarked.

This event underscored the Federation’s commitment to promoting the sport’s growth, especially following its recent achievements at the Pacific Games. Noteworthy this year was the remarkable rise in female participation, with many competitive female lifters taking part. Additionally, the presence of sub-junior and junior athletes added vibrancy to the event and showcased the promising future of powerlifting in Fiji, according to Laginikoro.

The competition witnessed numerous standout performances, with 22 national records broken across both men’s and women’s divisions. Many athletes achieved personal bests, pushing the limits of their strength. An impressive number of athletes successfully lifted weights of 300 kg and above during the event.

The championship was characterized by camaraderie and sportsmanship, as athletes encouraged each other while competing fiercely for top honors. A strong sense of community was evident, with experienced lifters mentoring younger athletes, inspiring them to reach beyond their limits.

Laginikoro highlighted that this year’s championship was distinguished by its strict adherence to competition rules and standards. “The event was meticulously organized to replicate the conditions of an international competition, including equipment checks and strict judging,” he explained. This focus on professionalism is part of the Federation’s strategy to enhance the quality of competitions and better prepare athletes for international events.

Special recognition was given to Chairman’s gym for providing calibrated plates for the event, ensuring athletes experienced equipment that meets international standards. Additionally, two new powerlifting bars provided by FASANOC greatly contributed to the competition’s success.

By participating in such rigorous competitions locally, athletes become better prepared both mentally and physically for challenges in their sport, fostering discipline, precision, and strategic planning essential for succeeding at elite levels.

Laginikoro expressed gratitude to Pacific Energy for their generous support, which was vital in organizing the event. With the National Championship now complete, the Federation is shifting its focus to the upcoming Oceania Powerlifting Championship, scheduled for October 30 to November 2, 2024, in Nauru. The Federation is finalizing the team that will represent Fiji and will work with the Fiji Sports Commission to secure necessary funding for the trip. Stakeholders and corporate entities are encouraged to support the athletes as they aim to bring honor to Fiji on an international stage.

This National Championship has reaffirmed the rapid rise of powerlifting in Fiji, and with continued support, the Federation is optimistic that Fiji will soon make a significant mark in international powerlifting.
