Fiji Ports Terminal Limited (FPTL) is set to boost its port capacity this year amid ongoing challenges of insufficient yard space and port congestion. The company’s Chief Executive Officer, Hasthika Dela, announced plans to achieve this enhancement through various technological advancements, streamlining operations, and acquiring new cargo handling machinery. Additionally, FPTL aims to remove underutilized structures and expand the yard area to better accommodate the demands of incoming vessels.

Addressing the ongoing congestion issues, Mr. Dela highlighted that the lack of quay length and enough yard space has been a persistent challenge for the terminal. He noted that last year, the situation was particularly difficult as many vessels arrived in clusters due to delays at other ports in Oceania and Asia. This irregular influx, compounded by adverse weather conditions in Suva, significantly strained the port facilities, leading to more congestion.

Mr. Dela emphasized that as a terminal operator, FPTL must manage all vessels on a first-come-first-served basis, which complicates operations during peak times. The terminal serves both local and international stakeholders at Fiji’s two principal ports, Suva and Lautoka, which handle about 95% of the country’s import and export cargoes. The Port of Suva is recognized as the key transshipment hub in the South Pacific region.

In summary, FPTL’s commitment to enhancing its capacity is crucial in mitigating port congestion and ensuring efficient operations, benefitting trade and commerce in and out of Fiji. The planned expansions and technological investments reflect a proactive approach towards addressing the challenges faced by the terminal, benefiting both local and international stakeholders in the long run.

This effort towards improvement not only signifies a step forward in managing logistical challenges but also showcases Fiji’s dedication to enhancing its maritime infrastructure, potentially driving economic growth and stability in the region.
