The Fiji Police Women’s Inter-Formation Volleyball and Netball Tournament commenced yesterday at the National Netball Centre in Laucala Bay, Suva, featuring ten divisions competing fiercely to dethrone the reigning champions from the Southern Division.
The tournament provides a platform for female police officers to not only vie for the championship but also to showcase their athletic talents to the coaches of the Police’s Sukuna Bowl teams in volleyball and netball. Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Salaseini Vakatuturagani, the deputy national coordinator of the Fiji Police Women’s Network, acknowledged the impressive turnout, noting, “The tournament today is bigger than those in previous years, especially last year’s. There are so many young and talented players who are here today.” She attributed the large representation of players to the significant percentage of women in the force, currently at 26%.
In line with similar events held in past years, this tournament is instrumental in selecting the teams for the upcoming Sukuna Bowl challenge next month. ASP Vakatuturagani has also called for support from male officers to bolster the morale of their female counterparts during the event.
The tournament draws parallels to the recent Police Wives Netball and Volleyball Tournament, which emphasized the importance of family support in the Police Force’s broader mission. The combination of competition and community spirit was underlined during that event as families gathered to cheer for their loved ones, further enriching the experience of camaraderie within the police community.
As the inter-formation tournament concludes today, the anticipation builds for the announcement of the final teams that will represent the force at the annual Sukuna Bowl. This competition not only highlights the athletic prowess of the police officers but also reinforces the unity and resilience of the Fiji Police Force, promising an exciting future for their sports endeavors.
