The Fiji Police Force has raised significant concerns regarding drivers who are neglecting road rules, particularly during the busy morning peak hours. Assistant Officer in Charge of Traffic, Matelita Daveta, emphasized that this troubling behavior has persisted since the beginning of the year, despite numerous calls for adherence to regulations.
Daveta pointed out the risks faced by officers who are tasked with directing traffic, as they often find themselves unprotected in the middle of the road. The situation has become increasingly dire, with five accidents involving students occurring this month alone, including one tragic fatality. This has resulted in a call for all motorists to be more vigilant and prioritize the safety of student pedestrians at all times.
The statistics reflect a worrying trend, with the road death toll for January standing at six, a sharp increase compared to just two in the same period last year. To date, the month of February has also seen one recorded death, whereas there were no fatalities during this time last year.
Daveta attributes the rise in accidents to driver negligence and noted that the Fiji Police Force is actively collaborating with the Land Transport Authority to implement measures aimed at improving road safety and compliance. This joint effort highlights the commitment to enhancing safety for all road users, particularly the vulnerable student population. By fostering awareness and encouraging responsible driving, there remains hope for a marked improvement in road safety across Fiji.
