The Fiji Police Force is on high alert as heavy rainfall and flooding impact various regions of the country this Christmas season. Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, has expressed concern over rising water levels and has emphasized the necessity for parents to keep their children away from flooded areas to prevent accidents.
Driu highlighted past incidents where lacking supervision led to tragic outcomes, underscoring the importance of vigilance during this festive time. “The Weather Office has issued advisories for the upcoming days, and we are already receiving reports of flooding in certain areas. We are urging all parents to ensure that their children steer clear of floodwater,” he said.
To enhance community safety, police will actively monitor flooded zones throughout the holiday period, with a primary aim of minimizing accidents. “Our officers will be present to oversee the conditions on the ground and check on areas affected by flooding. This is Christmas Eve, and we want to ensure that no unfortunate incidents occur,” Driu noted.
He also encouraged community cooperation to help secure everyone’s safety during this holiday season.
This proactive approach by the Fiji Police serves as a reminder of the importance of safety during extreme weather events, especially during a time generally associated with joy and celebration. The hope is for a safe, enjoyable Christmas for all, despite the challenges posed by the weather.
