Fiji Police Urges Vigilance After Tragic Child Accident

The Fiji Police Force is advising parents and guardians to be vigilant regarding the safety of their children after a tragic incident in Navosa. On March 9, 2025, a one-year-old boy suffered severe burns to over 50% of his body after coming into contact with a hot pot that had been left on the floor. The child was initially treated at Navosa Hospital and is currently receiving medical care at Lautoka Aspen Hospital.

Authorities have opened an investigation to determine if negligence was a factor in the incident. The Fiji Police Force has reiterated the importance of identifying and mitigating potential safety hazards within the home to protect young children from preventable accidents.

Similar incidents from the past underscore the ongoing challenge of child safety in Fiji. Recently, a one-year-old boy lost his life after wandering onto a road and being struck by a vehicle, highlighting the critical need for constant supervision. Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew has emphasized that accidents can happen in an instant and has urged families to be more alert and attentive to their children’s whereabouts.

Assistant Minister for Children Sashi Kiran has also called for increased awareness among parents, acknowledging that addressing child safety can be difficult, especially in urban settings. Together, these efforts reflect a community-wide commitment to ensuring children’s safety and preventing tragic accidents in the future.

By fostering awareness and emphasizing the need for diligent supervision, there is hope for reducing similar incidents and creating a safer environment for children in Fiji, allowing them to explore and grow while minimizing risks.
