The Fiji Police Force is cautioning small boat operators to pay close attention to weather conditions prior to going out to sea. This warning comes in response to an incident where Navua Police had to address a distress call yesterday afternoon. A large wave caused a fiberglass boat, carrying two individuals, to capsize near the Navua passage.
Officers from the Navua Police Station were dispatched on the FB Navua to engage in search and rescue operations, successfully rescuing the boat’s captain and a 17-year-old boy. The capsized vessel was recovered and returned to the captain after both individuals received medical attention at the Navua Hospital.
Assistant Commissioner of Police – Operations (ACP) Livai Driu expressed relief that there were no fatalities in this incident. He urged small boat operators to closely monitor weather updates and make informed decisions, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing safety at all times.
