Fiji Police Urge Small Boat Operators to Prioritize Safety Amid Weather Warnings

The Fiji Police Force has issued a warning to small boat operators about the importance of monitoring weather conditions prior to heading out to sea. This advisory comes in response to a recent incident where crews from the Navua Police were dispatched to assist with a distress call received yesterday afternoon. A fiberglass boat carrying two individuals capsized due to a large wave in the waters near the Navua passage.

Officers from the Navua Police Station were called to action on the FB Navua to carry out search and rescue operations, successfully rescuing the boat’s captain and a 17-year-old boy. The overturned vessel was also recovered and returned to the captain after the individuals received medical attention at Navua Hospital.

Assistant Commissioner of Police – Operations, Livai Driu, expressed relief that there were no fatalities in this incident. He emphasized the necessity for small boat operators to stay informed about weather updates and make safety a top priority at all times.
