The Fiji Police Force is urging parents and guardians to keep a close watch on their children to help prevent them from finding themselves in hazardous situations.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, reported that officers from the Valelevu Police and the National Fire Authority responded to an incident yesterday involving a 17-year-old student and an 18-year-old woman. The two were stranded on the banks of the Waikalou River in Kalabu, unable to cross due to strong currents.
Authorities were called to assist, and responders worked diligently to safely guide the individuals back across the river. Both were provided counseling on site, and their parents were notified about the situation before the two returned home safely.
As Fiji is currently experiencing its cyclone season, ACP Driu emphasized the importance of heeding weather warnings to prevent injury or potential loss of life. He cautioned that ignoring these warnings not only jeopardizes individual safety but also puts rescue teams at risk when they are called to assist.
This incident serves as a timely reminder of the importance of safety awareness, particularly during adverse weather conditions. By staying informed and vigilant, families can better protect themselves and help prevent dangerous situations for their loved ones.
Summary: The Fiji Police Force is advising parents to monitor their children closely following a recent rescue of two young individuals from the Waikalou River. With the onset of cyclone season, authorities stress the critical nature of adhering to weather warnings to ensure safety for everyone involved.
