The Fiji Police Force is urging parents and guardians to take an active role in supervising their children, particularly during the cyclone season when swimming and outdoor activities can be perilous. Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, reported a recent incident involving a 17-year-old student and an 18-year-old woman who found themselves in danger while swimming in the Waikalou River in Kalabu.
Due to strong currents, the two were unable to return safely and were stranded on the riverbanks. Emergency responders from Valelevu Police and the National Fire Authority promptly intervened, rescuing the pair and ensuring their safe passage across the river. After the incident, they received counseling, and their parents were alerted to the situation before the two returned home.
ACP Driu emphasized the importance of heeding weather warnings issued by authorities, particularly as Fiji enters its cyclone season. He cautioned that ignoring these alerts not only jeopardizes individuals’ safety but also places rescue teams in harm’s way.
