Fiji Police Urge Open Conversations: Safeguarding Youth from Hidden Dangers

The Fiji Police Force is urging parents and guardians to engage in conversations about sensitive topics, as it is crucial for children to receive vital information from trusted figures.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Crime, Mesake Waqa, highlighted the growing concerns regarding children exhibiting adult-like behavior, which has led to an increase in teen pregnancies and juveniles facing sexual offense charges.

ACP Waqa stated, “The Fiji Police Force acknowledges the issues raised by the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Health concerning young children’s involvement in adult-like behaviors, and parents are encouraged to continuously guide their children.”

He stressed the necessity of discussing taboo topics, explaining that if parents and guardians do not provide this information, children will seek it elsewhere.

The ACP underscored the importance of family in addressing significant challenges faced by young people in Fiji. He noted, “Everything starts from home. Consistent messaging from all stakeholders emphasizes the need for parents to monitor their children and their activities closely to prevent regrettable situations.”

Waqa mentioned that there is often an increase in reports of missing teens during school holidays and the Hibiscus festival, typically linked to a lack of communication between parents and children.

“Strict supervision can protect children from associating with the wrong crowd and becoming involved in circumstances that could adversely affect their lives and futures,” he added.

As efforts to combat the illicit drug trade gain traction, ACP Waqa also warned that children may become potential targets for drug dealers.

“Concerns regarding the exploitation of children to sell drugs should not be underestimated, as dealers typically target popular areas frequented by youths and juveniles,” he cautioned.

“Those involved in drug distribution are willing to go to great lengths to make money and will not hesitate to exploit innocent children.”
