Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu has expressed gratitude for the ongoing support from the Japanese Government, which has been instrumental in enhancing the Fiji Police Force’s operations. Recently, the Japanese Government donated a state-of-the-art Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV), an advanced underwater robot designed to assist police in assessing potentially dangerous situations safely.
According to the police, this donation is part of a broader initiative supported by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) that aims to equip law enforcement with essential underwater technology. “This collaboration strengthens our collective efforts to tackle maritime crimes effectively,” stated the police.
Japan’s Ambassador to Fiji, Rokuichiro Michii, reaffirmed his government’s commitment to bolstering the capabilities of the Fiji Police, emphasizing the importance of readiness in addressing shared maritime challenges. The UNODC program coordinator for Maritime Crime in the Pacific, Madushani Nawarathna, highlighted that the training associated with the ROV is a testament to a long-term commitment to sustainable cooperation against transnational maritime crimes.
Commissioner Tudravu noted that his team has greatly benefited from several years of capacity-building support, including specialized training and resources aimed at improving officer preparedness.
This partnership not only enhances Fiji’s policing capabilities but also fosters a sense of security within the community as the country takes proactive steps to address the challenges posed by maritime crime. The continued collaboration with Japan and international organizations like UNODC reflects a unified commitment to ensuring the safety and security of the region.
