The Fiji Police Force is taking significant steps toward reform with the launch of its Five-Year Strategic Plan 2025–2029, focusing on enhancing officer training, modern policing techniques, and restoring public trust. Assistant Superintendent of Police George Lagi, who leads the planning efforts, described the plan as a roadmap to meet evolving community demands and expectations.
The strategic framework is built on four key pillars: strategic planning and human resources, leadership, integrity and ethics, and operational capability. “We need to uplift our capabilities, invest more in training, and equip our officers with the right skills and knowledge,” said ASP Lagi. He emphasized the importance of integrating innovative approaches and technology while fostering a culture of continuous learning.
A significant aspect of the reform is strengthening the relationship between the police and the communities they serve. ASP Lagi noted that it is crucial to build a police force that is respected and trusted, ensuring that officers serve the community with integrity and excellence. Community engagement will play a vital role, as feedback from citizens will help shape the future of policing in Fiji.
This initiative comes amid rising crime rates, which reportedly saw a 26 percent increase in January 2025. The Fiji Police Force plans to implement various strategies, including community involvement and enhanced resource deployment to tackle these challenges effectively. The focus on modernization and rebuilding trust represents a hopeful shift toward a collaborative and secure environment for all Fijians.
Additionally, past efforts to reform the police force, such as the Police Reset initiative introduced by former Minister Pio Tikoduadua, underscore a continuous commitment to adapt policing methods.
