The Commissioner of Police, Rusiate Tudravu, announced that since 2020, 47 police officers have faced charges related to various drug offences. This disclosure was made during his presentation at the 27th Attorney-General’s conference held at the Sheraton Fiji Golf Resort and Spa in Nadi.
Tudravu elaborated that the offenses include tampering with assets, assault, unlawful possession, and unlawful imposition. He emphasized that the Criminal Investigation Department is responsible for handling all illicit drug cases, while the internal affairs unit conducts investigations regarding disciplinary action within the force.
Acknowledging the seriousness of these allegations, Tudravu admitted they have significantly undermined public trust in the police. He stated, “This in fact is affecting the police, public relations, impacting community, policy and practice.”
Since his appointment in February, Tudravu has been focused on strengthening the organization and restoring faith among the community in the Fiji Police Force. His commitment is to ensure transparency in operations and to demonstrate a renewed dedication to upholding the law.
As the police work to rebuild relationships within the community, there is a hopeful outlook that these efforts may lead to better policing practices and a safer environment for all citizens.
