The Fiji Police Force has reported a significant discovery of 31,000 marijuana plants in the tikina of Ono over the past week, as a part of their ongoing effort known as Operation Sasamaki. The police commissioner, Rusiate Tudravu, emphasized that investigators are actively working to identify the owner of the farm, following multiple successful operations that have led to the seizure of marijuana from various farms within the region.
In a separate operation, a 19-year-old man was apprehended for possessing close to 4,000 plants from a farm in the tikina of Yale. Commissioner Tudravu highlighted the high morale among officers engaged in Operation Sasamaki, underscoring their collective mission to disrupt, destabilize, and dismantle illicit drug networks.
Despite facing challenges in remote and rugged terrains, the police have shown determination, with Commissioner Tudravu assuring the public, “We will not stop as we are committed to seeing this through for the sake of our children, grandchildren, and future generation.” This effort comes in the wake of ongoing scrutiny regarding their approach, as he appeals for community support while reassuring that efforts against all illegal drugs remain equally prioritized.
These developments build upon the broader crackdown on drug cultivation in Fiji. Earlier reports indicated that during the initial weeks of March, nearly three tonnes of marijuana were seized, with multiple arrests made, including a village chief. Such consistent efforts by law enforcement reflect a robust strategy for tackling drug-related issues in the region, ultimately aiming to foster a safer environment for all citizens.
With ongoing collaboration between the police and the community, there is hope for a future with significantly reduced drug-related crime, reinforcing the importance of collective responsibility in combating these illegal activities throughout Fiji.
